Themes that have persisted across Overwatch 2's seasons so far are rather clear. Greek mythology didn't establish the cyberpunk genre, therefore it's intriguing to see the transition from futuristic to fantasy makeup. The next season, which is currently airing, leans toward a space opera aesthetic. Starwatch cosmetics are a wonderful way to pay respect to Star Wars, but season five might feel a little too safe. So far, Overwatch 2 has employed concepts that haven't been thoroughly explored through the game's many cosmetics. Overwatch 2 already has its share of fantasy skins

While there's plenty to be excited about in Overwatch 2's new roadmap, including season 5 content like the returning On Fire system, the possible fantasy theme isn't as much of a hit as it was in previous seasons. Given its promising name and shared imagery, Questwatch could be interesting as it looks a lot different from the franchise's typical formula, but with a plethora of fantasy costumes already present, the skins are in danger of feeling uninspired. Players don't have to hunt around for fancy outfits for Overwatch 2 heroes. One of the series' most iconic costumes is Witch Mercy, whose Halloween horror design also gained white and blue mage variants during the Anniversary Remix event. Kiriko has her own witch skin, but the fantasy designs don't stop at supporting categories. Orisa the Wood Elf thinks of the tank category, and so does Reinhardt, who has several knight skins because that's the core of his design.

Dragoon Mercy and World of Warcraft - Symmetra and Genji's Elf skins just add to the list of fantasy outfits, as do Mermaid Symmetra's and Torbjorn's Magni skins. All of this means that Blizzard will have to go to great lengths to offer something different from the fantasy cosmetics already in the game. While there are multiple options, Blizzard will have to dig deeper, as the community is sure to find yet another witch skin a disappointment.

More skin ideas come to mind when looking at the fantasy genre. A character like Doomfist can turn into an orc, while a little hero like Lucio can turn into a great hobbit. Continuing with the unofficial Lord of the Rings homage, someone as edgy as Reaper would make an excellent Sauron. Sprites have some potential, especially for flying characters like Echo, though Blizzard has to work hard to separate the aesthetic from Mercy's Sugar Plum skin.

Despite some options, it's hard not to feel like Blizzard is refurbishing territory if the theme of Season 5 is indeed fantasy. Hopefully, as Overwatch 2 moves toward more themed named seasons, it'll be careful to avoid what it's covered in the past. From superheroes to role-playing characters, there are tons of great themes to choose from for the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass.
